About Julie Schallhorn
Dr Schallhorn is Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. She is an ophthalmologist who treats diseases of the cornea and cataracts, performing cataract surgery, corneal transplants, and refractive surgery, such as LASIK.
After receiving her undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering and her Master's degree in Bio-engineering form the University of California, she completed her medical training at the University of California Keck School of Medicine. Dr Schallhorn completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of California in San Francisco before going on to complete fellowship training in Uveitis at the F.I. Proctor Foundation at UCSF and Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health Sciences University. She was on faculty at the University of Southern California's Roski Eye Institute before returning to San Francisco and the University of California San Francisco.
Dr Schallhorn has strong research interests in the study and improvement of refractive surgery outcomes, with a view to obtaining the best possible visual results for her patients after their procedure. During her career she has authored a number of peer-reviewed articles which include subjects such as visual outcomes, ocular surface disease and patient satisfaction after refractive surgery.
Dr Schallhorn is a reviewer for many leading ophthalmic journals. She presently sits on the Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee for Refractive Surgery for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Young Eye Surgeons Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, as well as the Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program Exam Development Committee. She also oversees residency training in ophthalmology at UCSF as the Associate Residency Program Director.
